Children in hospitals

June 2024,
Wiktorek zawitał do Fundacji na krotki odpoczynek w trakcie podróży ze Stanford do Polski z międzylądowaniem w Chicago. Cala podróż zniósł w doskonalej formie.
Antek przeszedł wiele operacji i czeka go jeszcze ta  ostatnia.

May 2024
To już dwa miesiące od operacji! Zuza ma się coraz lepiej i dzięki rehabilitacji jej nóżka dochodzi do siebie. Zuza staje już na całą stopę i nie kuleje – to ogromny postęp! Widać tutaj ogrom pracy rehabilitantów, którzy pomagają jej wrócić do przedoperacyjnej sprawności

Otrzymaliśmy wspaniała wiadomość z Ann&Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital w Chicago. Dzięki naszym staraniom Staś został oficjalnie zakwalifikowany na przyjęcie pierwszej na świecie terapii genowej na DMD – Dystrofia Mięśniowa Duchenne’a – do niedawna nieuleczalna choroba!

Wiktorii zostało 2,5 tygodnia rehabilitacji w szpitalu a potem – powrót do Polski.

April, 2024

Antos w środę przybył do szpitala Wills Eye Hospital w Philadelphia, PA do doktora Yoshihiro Yonekawy.

When Mateusz came to us in April the plan was that after about 5 months he’ll be ready to go back home. But due to complications that appeared unexpectedly, his stay at the hospital stretched out to over 16 months! But he fought and fought and overcame all the complications and against all odds he made it. We are so happy that Mateusz is getting better. We pray for his full and speedy recovery

Hania’s new prosthesis works ok so far. She gets used to this new device but looks like she’ll be fine

Ania’s futures changed dramatically. The photos show “Before and After” shots. What a change!!

Most recent once was done by dr. Palye on Michal’l knee where deep and bad infection settled. It is all over now: Michal takes his antibiotics and we hope for the best. The good news is that the bone that is being lengthened is behaving good, healing properly and as planned.

July 2021

Happy day! After today’s visit with doctor Paley Bruno got OK for leaving the hospital and go back home to Poland

We are so very grateful for Marcin Brzeski from NJ for his kindness and help. He was the one who drove Alex and his parents from the airport in NYC, NY to the hospital in Philadelphia, PA

It’s getting crowded at Children’s Center. Pola with her parents and her sister arrived today and joined Marcel and Kuba who are here already. Good thing that we have plenty of room to everybody feel comfortable.

Right before boarding the plane Sebastian told us about his impressions after 2 days at Dar Serca: “ We owe so much to the Foundation. It is fantastic to know that they’re always ready to help, to assist, to advise and to support. We are very grateful for all the help we got. We love you! This time around I got lucky for we had little bit, more free time between flights so, I could see some of Chicago. It is a beautiful city” – says Sebastian

We arrived to New York City in the middle of the night. In such cases one can always count on Marcin, the volunteer, who drove us to an apartment, where Maria was waiting for us with Polish food ready to be eaten. Next day we were ready to meet with specialists at Columbia University Medical Center, who will fix Nadia’s spine. Thank you Dar Serca Foundation for your help!

Marcel is doing really well after the liver transplant. His mum says: After doctors decided that it is safe for Marcel to be discharged, we went straight to Dar Serca’s home to rest, to recharge and to feel like in our own home. We are so very happy that Marcel’s condition improves but we take one day at the time. It is too serious condition he’s in to take it lightly. We hope that it is only going to get better. We pray for it”

„If everything will go accordingly to the plan, in a week time we’ll be back home in Poland” – says Mikolaj’s mum- “we are awfully grateful for the Foundation to be there for us every step of the way. We always can count on it.  My heartfelt thank you goes to all at the Foundation”

Błażej is happy that he can use swimming pool freely and lay on the bed in his favorite position. In about three weeks Blazej will see dr. Paley hoping that it will be the very last visit for him.

The bones are getting stronger and looks like in June the apparatus will be removed from Bruno’s both legs. Dr.  Paley says that most probably he’ll put casts on them for a month or so and an intensive PT will do the rest. Then we can start talking about returning to Poland …

Wiktor is feeling pretty good after an open heart surgery. „ At Children’s Hospital in Boston is just great if you are a parent of a sick child to be allowed to stay with a child at all times it is really fantastic; such arrangements bring comfort and peace of mind to parents  – says Wiktor’s mum- „ It would be absolutely impossible in Poland”

Nemours Hospital in Wellington, DE was the best choice for Maja’s unique needs. Her surgery was successfully performed there by Dr. Suken Shah, who implanted MAGEC™ growing rods. The rods lengthen magnetically as a person grows, the unique feature which greatly reduces needs for future surgeries. One of the first things Maja said after surgery was, “I can breathe again!” “I was so happy to have this chance to help my child,” says her mom Paulina. It didn’t matter how far I had to travel. The doctors here at Nemours gave Maja back her breath”

Adam is a boy who never shows anxiety or stress before visits with his doctor. Even now, after over a year since last visit Adam can’t wait to see him. Good boy Adam is all smiles…

Dawidek po operacji 1 Dawidek po opercji  Dawid’s surgery performed by dr. Paley was successful and Dawid is really happy that it’s over. The limbs’ lengthening  and reconstruction process started with installation of external fixators. When on it,  dr. Paley decided to take care of Dawid’s right hand’s deformities at the same time .

PatrykPatryk is all set for adjustments that are planned by specialists to improve his arms: the left elbow’s tension that kips the whole arm bended is going to be released in such way that Patryk will be able (finally!) to operate it freely. As for the right hand,  a special prosthesis is being made by technicians and Patryk is really happy with the way the things go

Everything went well and Dominik is recovering nicely. It is going to take 4 week for doctors to determinate if there is a need for another intervention.

Cholewa, zdj po operacji  Lenka didn’t take well what she had to deal with after the surgery. She was very upset by the fact that she has the fixators attached to her legs. She tried to pull them away,  hit them to the point that her small hands were turning blue… Time passed and she got used to the whole situation thanks to everyday’s practices at the clinic and at home. It is still very painful for Lenka when the screws are being turn and tighten. She cries a lot… Still, the doctors are in awe how well she takes the whole ordeal. Thank you all for the help we get  – very grateful Lenka’s mom,  Anna Cholewa

Antos Everything is going well for Antos. He still has to have the respiratory tube installed  but only ’till September. It is really a tiny one and  . Antos breathes like there is no help at all. They even removed it for few hours and he was breathing very well . If nothing happens, we’ll be all set by the end of September. Then in a year we’ll comeback just for a plastic surgery to fix the hole where the respirator is placed. PS. Yesterday firefighters on this big red fire engine visited children in the hospital. Antos was beside himself with excitement!. What a treat! Thank you all for good wishes.

234The bone in Kuba’s left leg  has grown already over 6cm that made both legs almost even.  This is a huge progress – writes Kuba’s mom –  A very intense physical therapy, including 2 hours/day of swimming makes all the difference and even though it is a hard and sometimes painful process, we are both very happy with the results.

3 2 1 News from Kubus’ mom: It took  a while for Kubus to get used to the apparatus attached to his leg. He is 4 and understands a lot but this situation overwhelmed us totally. Kubus couldn’t understand at first the difficulties that he must face while walking, the pain caused by the heavy metal rings attached to his leg he must experience . Fortunately it is all behind us. It’s been over a week now since the pain is gone and Kuba does not have any difficulties with walking on his own. Every day makes it easier and better. To fulfill all the required PT and exercise routines it takes almost a whole day, every day. For a few days now we started to use a swimming pool as an additional place for his therapy. The water relaxes muscles and hamstrings and is fun altogether therefore Kubus is happy as can be, which the most important thing. Recent visit with dr. Paley was very encouraging: everything looks good, the bone is growing as it should, the sores around pins are healing, so it was a good visit. Thank you  Dar Serca for all the support we get – Kubus’ mom Agnieszka Szymelfenig.

Mikolaj Teodorczuk 1 Mikolaj is a patient at dr. Paley’s clinic in West Palm Beach, FL. Here’s an update sent to us by his mom : yesterday the first stage of lengthening process of Mikolaj’s right leg ended!!!!! After looong 94 days we’re done with adjusting screws – the everyday excruciatly painful routine. The leg reached the demanded length, is even longer now that the other one ! Because of that the final length difference will form in much slower pace. Dr. Paley’s is taking under consideration placing an 8″ plate in place of the apparatus but it will be decided after a while. Mikolaj is happy as can be and the picture shows it best. I’m sending best wishes to all at the foundation! – Mikolaj’s mum.

Jas 2 Jas is a patient at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, NY. His mom writes: so far everything is going according to doctor’s plan. Jas received  four chemotherapy sessions so far. We hope that there will be no need for additional chemo and he’ll stay with just laser treatments  from now on.  It all will be decided after next check-up visit. So far everything goes the way it suppose to. Thank you & greetings from Jas and I to all at Dar Serca!

Oliwia will stay at the Institute ’till May 25th and then she’ll be free to go back to Poland for 4-5 months. After that time she will return to West Palm Beach for the apparatus removal.

Zojka First surgery – fingers’ separation-  is behind us – writes Zojka’s mom –   Zoja was very brave and all the casts that she has on do not bother her a bit. They will be removed in 4 weeks. The skull surgery is planned on the beginning of January, 2015.

***********************************
Skoczek, MichalLast Friday Marcin underwent a surgery on his hip, knee and ankle joints – writes Marcin’s father – the surgery lasted over 10 hours and first two days afterwards were somewhat difficult. Now Marcin is doing good, is in good spirits and slowly but surely he is getting back to his usual self.  The physical therapy sessions already started. Marcin is 14 and that was his 37th, in dr. Paley’s words “last chance surgery”.  All previous were done in Poland and didn’t give positive results. I hope this one will enable Marcin to walk on his own without crotches and a wheelchair. We appreciate so much all the help and care that we got from all involved in Dar Serca Foundation. Because of that, what was unimaginable before, became a reality!  To all involved in DS work we thank you for financial assistance, for constant support and kindness. On behalf of Marcin and our family we send you most sincere and warm greetings! –  Marek Skoczek

IMAG0926Aside of his SDR procedure that Bartek just completed at Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, MO, he had serious problems with his eyesight that needed to be taken care of by the specialists at Children’s Hospital in St. Louis immediately. Thanks to a swift and effective action of St. Louis’ Polonia and our help (the needed procedure’s cost was over $11,000) yesterday Bartek’s sight was successfully corrected. Everything went well – writes Bartek’s mom – We had a moment of uncertainty right after, when Bartek told us that he can’t see anything but darkness… After 15 minutes everything came back and we are all so very happy! From the bottom of our hearts we thank you all for making it possible!

IMAG0907  IMAG0927  After first surgery at Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, MO Bartus is able to move his feet like never before; these amazing results already make us so very happy  and we would like to thank Dar Serca for making it possible – writes Bartus’ mom

IMG_0640 IMG_0643Life revolves between the Clinic and our hotel – writes Agnieszka’s mom –  Agnes is doing very well as far as the pt goes. Wounds are healing nicely and we can’t wait for the follow-up visit with dr. Paley scheduled for September 8th.

IMG_0587 IMG_0584 Scheduled for August 13th surgery went as planned and was successful. Even though it was suppose to take 16 hours, doctors were done after 10 hours, which was a good sign. Dr. Paley was happy with the results and  said ” looks very good, perfect!” What was important to me it was the fact that I could be with Agnieszka at the operating room until she was anaesthetized . She is in some pain but overall Agnieszka is taking everything with a smile and understanding. Every day her condition is improving and the first post-surgery check-up visit with dr. Paley went very well. He likes the improvement and we do too.

Damian underwent a very serious surgery on his hands and feet. last Thursday. He was discharged from Shriners Hospital on Friday and is doing great! Today he started play on his computer and despite the pain, he is making his fingers move! Speedy recovery Damian! 1 2 3

Michal went to the hospital to get one surgery and ended up having two at the same time. Dr. Reddy decided that he has to take care of urinary tract right there and then.  Michal took it as a champ! What left now is a long healing process and pain, but he is getting better and better each passing day.

**************************************

Amelia’s surgery lasted over 10 hours but everything went very well. There was a little misfortune on the way though: the cast in the hill area was made too tight and after few days there were blisters that very quick turned into a wound. Everything is ok now but Amelia is still taking painkillers.

****************************************

Michal is already at Childrens’ Hospital in Cincinnati, OH; his surgery is scheduled for April 21st

Artur underwent hip, knee & ankle  reconstruction surgery at Paley’s Institute; everything went very well – says Artur’s mom. Up until the day of surgery dr. Paley wasn’t sure if he will be able to do all three joints at once but he did it perfectly!   Because of that dr. Paley can now plan the next step : lengthen Artur’s right femur

Kacper is already at Shriners Hospital in Boston , MA and dr. Lawlor saw him for the first time for an evaluation; today Kacper is scheduled for an endoscopy . Let’s hope that all tests’ results will enable doctors to eliminate a cleft in Kacper’s larynx.

Lester is still at Shriners Hospital but is about to leave  after very successful spine surgery

So far everything goes according to the plan. Last Thursday Frank underwent SDR surgery and the rehabilitation started right away. As a result, he made few steps on his own already! In next couple of days we’ll know if there will be a need for an additional surgery.

Kaja’s second surgery on her  features went as planned; now it is time for rehabilitation & rest. It will take a while before severe swelling will disappear but Kaja is very brave and ignores it although there are moments that she just feel like crying, which is completely understandable.

Our Zuzanna, even though yesterday she underwent a very serious spinal fusion surgery at Shriners Hospital for Children in Chicago, smiles happily and talks with an energy that we all could use… She is resting comfortably at ICU and, according to her doctor, everything went very well. Speedy recovery Zuzia !

Malgosia is doing alright (there are some side effects e.g. itching & peeling skin, nothing major) but she is waiting what dr.  Paley will say during the up coming control visit next week.  As far as healing goes, everything is looking good… On the photo: Antosia stopped by for a little chat.

Hello from Florida: these are the children that are  dr. Paley’s patients at Paley’s Institute in West Palm Beach, FL and who are under GFHF care;

The Illizarov apparatus was finally removed and Malgosia is looking forward to enjoy long-planned trip to see dolphins. In her words, if only she could touch & talk to one, it would make her leg heal and grow so much faster… This dream is so easy to fulfill, at least the first part.. It is going to be a long process of rehabilitation but every day brings some improvements. Speedy recovery Malgosia and have fun with dolphins!

Kuba is in a process of rehabilitation of treated leg; three times a week he is undergoing intensive physical therapy that will end next week. On December 2nd dr. Paley will decide what is going to be next. If x-rays and check-up will come up ok, Kuba will go back home to Poland right on time for Christmas.

Michal is resting comfortably after the surgery. Took it very well and we wish him speedy recovery.

*************************************

Filip is resting after today’s surgery; everything went well and doctors are happy with results

*************************************

Jakub  is recuperating after recent surgery. Good news:  today casts from both legs and upper torso will be removed. After that only left leg will be set in a new, removable cast/brace. It will make all the difference : with light cast  Jakub will be able to get out of bed and move around.

Ala is still at Paley’s Institute and she is doing well; we sent Ala a couple of gifts for her to play with and forget for a while about this big machine that her leg is trapped in

******************************************

Marysia went through a lot while at Paley Institute in West Palm Beach: lots of pain, additional procedures, infections and more pain. Fortunately, it is all behind her now. Doctors managed to eliminate infections, ease the pain and clean the wound. Now Marysia can again enjoy beautiful surroundings and smile. We were looking for good news and it seems like everything is on the right track .

*********************************

Despite little infection that crippled into fresh wounds Ala is doing just fine; takes some antibiotics and enjoys as much as possible the place where she is right now – West Palm Beach, Fl

*************************************

Even though Marysia still has a hard time to sleep through the night , days make up for it totally; physiotherapists at Paley’s Institute are amazed how fit and strong Marysia is and because of that she was able to start to move around on her own after 13 days after the surgery!

Marysia’s surgery was not easy but successful. Doctor Paley who performed the surgery at Paley Institute in W. Palm Beach , Fl is very happy with the result. Yesterday Marysia was released from the clinic and even though there is still a long way to full recovery her parents are very satisfied and absolutely ecstatic with the fact that the process of fixing Marysia’s leg has started.

Kaja is still in Children’s Hospital in Dallas , TX. It is going to take time before the whole process of bone reconstruction will be over. Before departure to Poland, Kaja will come to Dar Serca on Feb. 9th.

Alan is doing very well. Last Friday Dr Paley ensured us that everything is going the way he wanted to. The foot started to turn into the right position, the bones’ expanded significantly: one for 37 millimeters, another  for 25 millimeters. It’s totally amazing! Dr Paley is simply a miracle maker!

Last week Alan had a first of a series surgeries that he’s scheduled to have. Alan’s mom wrote to us:  Alan is doing really good and Dr Paley says that everything went the way he wanted to. Today , even though he doesn’t like Ilizarov apparatus that has been applied to his leg, Alan says he’s feeling all right. I try to explain that everything needs time and he’ll get used to this situation. And that every day will bring positive changes… (Alan is a patient of Dr. Paley Institute in West Palm Beach, FL)

Wiktoria’s spine surgery that was performed at Shriners Hospital yesterday (Nov. 27th) went very well; this picture was taken today and Wiktoria is already all smiles; get well soon Wiktoria and we all wish you speedy recovery!

 Nov. 9th, Olivia still at Shriners Hospital recuperating, busy playing, looking sweet; loves when visitors come;

 After long 4 months of waiting, it’s over: Olivia underwent a very serious spine surgery on October 30th and she is doing great! On this picture she is resting comfortable, she is actually sitting (sic!) which makes even hospital’s staff wonder how’s it possible… we are so very happy that the surgery that lasted almost 8 hours, Olivia didn’t need much of help of ICU and if it was up to her she would be able to left hospital today;
